Perry Street Challenge Cup Final (at Forton Rangers)

South Petherton 2 W and Mid Chinnock 1

GOALS from Hayden Smith and Shane Adcock-Case saw ten-man South Petherton lift the Challenge Cup for the first time in 39 years.

Pethy took the lead in the 19th minute when Smith latched onto Danny Rendell’s through ball and slotted past Chinns’ keeper-manager Matt Alford.

A disputed penalty decision after Rendell went down in the area allowed Adcock-Case to double the lead from the spot on the half hour.

Alford’s side pulled one back five minutes after the break when Tom Charles’ cross was converted by a spectacular bicycle kick from Liam Bennett.

Chinns’ hopes were raised further when defender Tom Case was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card but Pethy boss Karl Diment shifted his skipper Lee Richards into the back four as his depleted team, kicking against the elements, held on.

Rendell went close with a breakaway only to be denied by a fine stop from Alford.

The Chinnocks kept pressing to the end but the Magpies saw out the win.

Despite the defeat Alford was impressed by his team, he said: “I was proud to see how the team conducted themselves in front of such a large crowd.

We respect each other and the officials, and although we couldn’t get the end result we won many plaudits.”
