Uhlsport Somerset League Cup: lminster Town 0-1 Mendip Broadwalk

ILMINSTER Town despite giving their all in an action packed second half performance could not find the goal that would have taken this Somerset County League Cup Quarter Final into penalties.

In the end the League leaders Mendip Broadwalk were too strong and a Joe Pratt second half header was enough to take them into the last four.

The visitors started strong dominating play and forcing the Blues deep into their own half where some last ditch defending kept the score at 0-0.

With 19 minutes gone Mendip worked an overload on the right and when the ball went into the box they looked certain to take the lead only for Jack Rutter to make a brilliant point blank save.

Mendip knocked on the door again towards the end of the half with Louis Rutter heading a corner from right under the cross bar to safety.

It was certainly had been back to the wall defending during the first half onslaught with Harry Manley throwing his body on the line as he managed to block the final effort of the half as Mendip looked for the goal their dominance deserved.

Ilminster started the second half better and had their first chance of the match when  Rutter got on the end of a Callum Lacey free kick, his well directed header was well saved at full stretch from the keeper.

The match was more even now with the play going end to end.

Rutter could not quite get over the ball as his header flashed over the cross bar.

Mendip finall broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute when a deep corner was headed back across goal and Joe Pratt headed home to make it 1-0.

Ilminster rallied in the closing stages, Thomas Lee headed just over from a corner and Skipper Lee Sweet had a great chance as he twisted and turned in the box only to be denied by a block on the line.

Jack Rutter who had an outstanding match in goal was player of the match.
