Uhlsport Somerset Premier Division: Clevedon United 2-1 Ilminster Town

AFTER the recent postponements due to heavy rain of the past couple of weeks Ilminster Town travelled to Clevedon on Saturday for an away fixture against a side that have consistently finished in the top four of the Somerset County League inn the past few seasons, writes Andrew Fish.

Ilminster conceded in the first minute when the defence was caught flat footed, with the hosts scoring from a corner to take an early lead.

Both sides battled to gain the upper hand after this, it took until the last twenty minutes before the Blues picked up the pace. Callum Lacey delivered a great ball into the box and Harry Manley was unlucky not bro score as his header was brilliantly cleared off the line with an athletic clearance behind for a corner. From the corner Jack Steer had an effort that was again cleared off the line as Clevedon rode their luck.

Jack Rutter then made a great save just before half time when with the striker through one on one he stood strong and won the duel.

Ilminster continued on the front foot at the start of the second half, Lewis Trusson picked out Taylor Jefferson who saw his goal bound shot strike an arm in the penalty box.

With a penalty awarded, Trusson stepped up confidently to find the corner to make it 1-1.

The Blues stopped playing after this letting Clevedon back into the match, they took advantage by going 2-1 ahead from another corner after a goal mouth scramble.

In the last minute keeper Jack Rutter up for a corner very nearly was the hero with a header that crept inches wide.

Next up for the team is the highly anticipated local derby against local rivals Chard Town on Boxing Day Tuesday 26th December at the Archie Gooch Pavilion, the match kicks off at 12.00 midday.
