Plans to carry out repair works at Barrington Court, Ilminster

The application could allow the masonry on the roof of the buildings at Barrington Court to be removed, repaired, and partially replaced for full reinstatement to be completed by the end of 2026.

A planning document read: “Scaffold was erected in January 2022 to carry out urgent roof repairs in advance of a major project that is still at the feasibility stage to carry out wider roof repairs on the Court House and Strode House.

“While the scaffold was in place the National Trust Project Manager inspected the masonry accompanied by a stone mason and was concerned of the instability of some chimneys and finials.

“He contacted Somerset Council who advised that these hazardous structures could be carefully taken down as they posed a potential hazard to health and safety.

“It was agreed that this would be followed up with a Section 19 amendment to regularise the LBC. The masonry is now on the ground and stored at Barrington.

“Any material that can be reused will be reinstated and new Hamstone cut and carved to existing dimensions where the old is not of good enough quality to reinstate.

“This work will be carried out to coincide with the roof project with completion expected by the end of 2026.”
