A FIRE that broke out in Chard last week has had devastating consequences on two businesses.

The blaze started at PMBL on Leach Road in the early hours of Sunday, February 25, and also damaged a martial arts club, Chard Tae Kwon-do.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service initially sent six fire crews, which then became eight, and asked residents to close their windows and doors due to the smoke.

A spokesperson said: “The roof of the building was fully involved in the fire and the building was deemed to be too unsafe, so crews had to withdraw and fight the fire defensively.”

Yesterday (Tuesday, February 27), Holyrood Academy said they will host the activities of Chard Tae Kwon-do for three weeks, with the potential for extension depending on the club’s needs.

Chard Tae Kwon-do expressed gratitude for the opportunity to utilize Holyrood Academy's facilities and highlighted the positive impact on the local community.

The martial arts club will be able to run its activities in one of the school’s hall for at least three weeks.

Headteacher Dave MacCormick said: “Chard is a great community which I know will pull together to make sure that club members can keep pursuing their passions.”

The fire service said the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
