Connor Hyde was awarded the Lord’s Taverners Inspire Award at the Sport Gives Back Awards on Thursday, March 7.

He was recognised for his inspiring work with the Super 1s disability cricket programme in Somerset.

Connor received his award from England world cup winner and Ashes hero Chris Woakes.

Connor initially attended Super 1’s sessions as a player, but after a few months and with his confidence boosted, he began leading warmups and gaining transferable skills in cricket coaching.

He then began coaching cricket at his local club, working at a local gym and delivering on the Somerset Cricket Foundation’s Walking Cricket initiative for over 50s.

In addition to his work with Super 1s, Connor supports Hilton Cricket Club and Yeovil Cricket Club in the running of their national programs as well as supporting Ilton CC with their junior section.

On the award and the evening, Connor said: “It felt really good to win the award, it made me feel proud to have achieved this. I was surprised but so happy!

"The evening was amazing, I enjoyed meeting all the sports celebrities – I got to chat to Mo Farah, I challenged him to a race but he said he’s retired and that I would probably beat him!

"I shared jokes with Daliso Chaponda and spent a lot of time with Chris Woakes talking cricket. I had met him before and it was great to catch up with him again. He told me the tips I gave him last time worked!

"It was like meeting up with a friend – he really took interest in what I had been doing.”

Lord’s Taverners CEO Mark Curtin said: “Connor’s attitude and achievements are truly inspiring, not just for his peers, but for all of us.

"He is a fantastic role model for everyone on the programme – supporting them to build confidence, self-esteem and social skills they need to reach their potential.”

And Steve Gass, Community Programmes Manager at Somerset Cricket Foundation said: “Connor’s award is no accident or a surprise to those that know him.

"He is an excellent role model, as he epitomises the values of hard work, dedication, and operating outside of your comfort zone. He deserves his recognition as he is brilliant advert for sport and disability sport.

"Connor’s attitude is about moving forward and continuing to strive for your goals. Connor has certainly done this and excelled at many of his objectives."
